D. H. Lawrence was an English novelist, poet, and essayist, born on September 11, 1885, in Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, England. He was the fourth of five children in a working-class family. His father was a coal miner, and his mother was a former schoolteacher. Lawrence's childhood was marked by poverty and illness, which he later wrote about in his novels. Lawrence attended Nottingham High School and later won a scholarship to study at Nottingham University College. He then went on to study at the University of London, where he became interested in literature and began writing poetry and short stories. In 1912, Lawrence published his first novel, The White Peacock, which received mixed reviews. However, his second novel, Sons and Lovers, published in 1913, was a critical and commercial success. The novel is a semi-autobiographical account of Lawrence's childhood and his relationship with his mother.
