Heric resists and in a moment of panic, accidentally kills the patrolman. He and his wife, Marta, dispose of the body and anticipate that the Council will send for Heric again. Heric has been having strange dreams and feels a sense of impending understanding. In his dream, he sees a ruined city and a crowd of people moving eastward with a sense of ecstasy.
