The only animal life they encounter are small creatures and birds, unafraid of their presence. Venus resembles a mildly tropical Earth, with a misty, drowsing calm. However, their ship is in poor condition and cannot take off again. Communication with Earth is also lost. Despite these setbacks, the crew's orders are to establish an outpost on Venus and gather information about the new world. They are to be joined by engineers and laborers in a year to form the first colony. McBride and his crew start to settle in, but their peace is disrupted when Jeff Flaunders discovers a potential poisoning threat from native Venusian food. The crew must now navigate this new challenge in their mission.
