Stewart Culin (1858-1929) was an American ethnographer and museum curator who is best known for his work in the field of Asian art and culture. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Culin was educated at the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied anthropology and archaeology.
After completing his studies, Culin began working as a curator at the Brooklyn Museum, where he developed an interest in Asian art and culture. He went on to become the curator of the Department of Ethnology at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, where he worked for over 30 years.
During his career, Culin conducted extensive research on the material culture of China and other Asian countries. He wrote several books on the subject, including "Korean Games with Notes on the Corresponding Games of China and Japan" (1895), "Chinese Games with Dice and Dominoes" (1895), and "Chess and Playing-Cards: Catalogue of Games and Implements" (1896).
