Robert Louis Stevenson was a Scottish novelist, poet, and travel writer born on November 13, 1850, in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was the only child of Thomas Stevenson, a lighthouse engineer, and Margaret Balfour. Stevenson was a sickly child and spent much of his childhood confined to his bed. During this time, he developed a love for reading and storytelling, which would later become his career.
Stevenson attended the University of Edinburgh to study engineering but soon switched to law. However, he was more interested in writing and literature, and he began to publish his works in various magazines. His first book, An Inland Voyage, was published in 1878 and chronicled his travels in a canoe through Belgium and France.
Stevenson's most famous work, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, was published in 1886. The novel explores the duality of human nature and the struggle between good and evil. It became an instant success and has since become a classic of English literature.
