Mrs. J. H. Riddell, born Charlotte Eliza Lawson Cowan, was a British author and playwright who lived from 1832 to 1906. She was known for her gothic and supernatural fiction, which often featured haunted houses and ghostly apparitions.
Riddell was born in Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland, and grew up in a family of writers and artists. Her father was a painter, and her mother was a writer and poet. Riddell began writing at a young age and published her first novel, The Moors and the Fens, in 1858.
Over the course of her career, Riddell wrote more than 50 novels and numerous short stories, many of which were serialized in magazines. Her most famous works include The Uninhabited House (1875), A Struggle for Fame (1883), and The Haunted River (1888).
Riddell was also a successful playwright, and several of her plays were produced in London's West End. She was a member of the Society of Authors and was highly respected in literary circles.
