Mrs. Henry Wood was the pen name of Ellen Price, a British author born on January 17, 1814, in Worcester, England. She was the daughter of a wealthy ironmaster and received a good education, which included studying French and Italian. She married Henry Wood, a railway engineer, in 1836 and had six children. Wood began writing in her thirties to supplement her family's income. Her first novel, "Danesbury House," was published in 1860 and was a success. She went on to write over thirty novels, many of which were serialized in magazines before being published as books. Her most famous work is "East Lynne," which was published in 1861 and became a bestseller. It has been adapted for the stage, film, and television numerous times. Wood's novels were popular because they dealt with social issues of the time, such as the plight of women and the working class.
