Maria Thompson Daviess was an American author born on November 25, 1872, in Harrodsburg, Kentucky. She was the daughter of a prominent lawyer and politician, and her family was well-known in the community. Daviess attended the University of Kentucky and later studied at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music.
Daviess began her writing career in the early 1900s, and her first novel, The Melting of Molly, was published in 1901. The book was a success and was later adapted into a play. She went on to write several more novels, including The Tinder Box (1905), The Daredevil (1909), and The Golden Bird (1913).
The Golden Bird is perhaps Daviess' most famous work. The book tells the story of a young woman named Doris who inherits a large sum of money from her uncle. Doris must navigate the challenges of newfound wealth and the attentions of several suitors. The book was a bestseller and was later adapted into a silent film.
