Lewis Carroll was the pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, an English writer, mathematician, and photographer. He was born on January 27, 1832, in Daresbury, Cheshire, England, and was the third of eleven children. His father was a country parson, and his mother was the daughter of a wealthy merchant. Carroll was a gifted mathematician and attended Oxford University, where he became a lecturer in mathematics. He was also an avid photographer and took many portraits of children, including Alice Liddell, the inspiration for his most famous work, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Carroll's first published work was a mathematical treatise called The Fifth Book of Euclid Treated Algebraically, which was published in 1860.
