Joseph Carey was an American author, born in 1879 in San Francisco, California. He grew up in a family of writers, with his father and grandfather both being journalists. Carey attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he studied English literature and journalism.
After graduation, Carey worked as a journalist for various newspapers in California, including the San Francisco Chronicle and the Sacramento Bee. He also wrote short stories and novels, often drawing inspiration from his experiences living in San Francisco.
One of Carey's most famous works is the short story "By the Golden Gate," which was published in 1913. The story is a romantic tale set in San Francisco, and it quickly became popular among readers. Carey went on to write several other short stories and novels, including "The Heart of the Hills" and "The Bell-Ringer of Angel's."
