John Ames Mitchell was an American author, publisher, and architect born on January 17, 1845, in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. He was the son of a prominent lawyer and politician, and he attended Harvard University, where he studied architecture. After graduation, Mitchell worked as an architect in New York City, designing buildings such as the Manhattan Life Insurance Building and the Astor Library. He also became involved in publishing, co-founding the magazine Life in 1883, which became one of the most popular and influential magazines of the time. Mitchell was a prolific writer, publishing several novels, short stories, and plays throughout his career. His most famous work is The Last American, a science fiction novel published in 1889 that imagines a future where the United States has been destroyed and the last surviving American travels the world to find a new home.
