Jane Austen was an English novelist born on December 16, 1775, in Steventon, Hampshire, England. She was the seventh child of a country clergyman and grew up in a close-knit family. Austen was educated at home and began writing at a young age. Her father encouraged her writing and provided her with access to his extensive library.
Austen's first novel, Sense and Sensibility, was published in 1811, followed by Pride and Prejudice in 1813. Her other works include Mansfield Park (1814), Emma (1815), Northanger Abbey (1818), and Persuasion (1818). Austen's novels are known for their witty social commentary, realistic characters, and romantic plots.
Austen's personal life was relatively uneventful. She never married and lived with her family for most of her life. She was close to her sister Cassandra and corresponded with her regularly. Austen's health began to decline in her early forties, and she died on July 18, 1817, at the age of 41.
