Jacob Abbott was an American author born on November 14, 1803, in Hallowell, Maine. He was the son of a Congregational minister and was raised in a religious household. Abbott attended Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, where he studied theology and graduated in 1820. After college, Abbott became a teacher and taught at various schools in Massachusetts and Maine. He also began writing textbooks for his students, which eventually led to his career as an author. Abbott's first book, The Young Christian, was published in 1829 and was followed by several other religious works. In 1831, Abbott became the pastor of the Congregational Church in Roxbury, Massachusetts. He continued to write and publish books, including his most famous work, the Rollo series. The Rollo books were a series of children's books that followed the adventures of a young boy named Rollo. The series was immensely popular and was translated into several languages.
