Jack London

Author Profile

Jack London was an American author and journalist who was born on January 12, 1876, in San Francisco, California. He was the son of Flora Wellman, a music teacher, and William Chaney, a journalist. However, his father abandoned the family, and his mother later married John London, a Civil War veteran, who gave Jack his last name.
London had a difficult childhood, and he had to work from a young age to support his family. He worked in various jobs, including as a sailor, a gold prospector, and a factory worker. However, he was determined to become a writer, and he spent his free time reading and writing.
London's first success as a writer came with his short story "To Build a Fire," which was published in 1902. He went on to write many other popular works, including The Call of the Wild (1903), White Fang (1906), and Martin Eden (1909).
