J. Sheridan Le Fanu was an Irish author born on August 28, 1814, in Dublin, Ireland. He was the third son of a Protestant clergyman and grew up in a literary family. His father, uncle, and grandfather were all writers, and his mother was a novelist.
Le Fanu attended Trinity College in Dublin, where he studied law. However, he never practiced law and instead pursued a career in journalism and writing. He began his career as a journalist, writing for the Dublin University Magazine and the Evening Mail. He later became the owner and editor of the Dublin University Magazine.
Le Fanu is best known for his Gothic horror stories, which were popular in the Victorian era. His most famous works include "Carmilla," "Uncle Silas," and "In a Glass Darkly." "Carmilla" is a vampire novella that predates Bram Stoker's "Dracula" and is considered a classic of Gothic literature. "Uncle Silas" is a mystery novel that features a sinister uncle and a young heiress.
