Horatio Alger Jr. was an American author born on January 13, 1832, in Chelsea, Massachusetts. He was the son of a Unitarian minister and grew up in a strict religious household. Alger attended Harvard University and graduated in 1852. After graduation, he worked as a teacher and a minister before turning to writing.
Alger is best known for his rags-to-riches stories, which were popular in the late 19th century. His stories often featured young boys who rose from poverty to success through hard work, determination, and honesty. Alger's stories were seen as a reflection of the American Dream, and they were popular with young readers.
Some of Alger's best-known works include "Ragged Dick," "Tattered Tom," "Mark, the Match Boy," and "Cast Upon the Breakers." "Ragged Dick" was published in 1867 and tells the story of a young boy who rises from poverty to become a successful businessman. The book was a huge success and spawned a series of sequels.
