Honoré de Balzac was a French novelist and playwright born on May 20, 1799, in Tours, France. He was the eldest son of a civil servant and a mother who came from a family of wealthy merchants. Balzac's parents separated when he was young, and he was raised by his mother and grandmother.
Balzac was educated at the Collège de Vendôme, where he studied law. However, he soon abandoned his legal studies to pursue a career in writing. He moved to Paris in 1819 and began writing plays and novels. His first novel, Les Chouans, was published in 1829.
Balzac's writing was characterized by his attention to detail and his ability to create complex characters. He was also known for his use of realism in his writing, which was a departure from the romanticism that was popular at the time.
Some of Balzac's best-known works include La Comédie Humaine, a collection of over 90 novels and stories that depict French society in the early 19th century.
