Herbert A. Giles was a British diplomat, sinologist, and scholar who was born on December 8, 1845, in Oxford, England. He was the son of a clergyman and was educated at Charterhouse School and Corpus Christi College, Oxford. After completing his studies, Giles joined the British consular service in China in 1867 and served in various posts for over thirty years.
During his time in China, Giles became interested in Chinese language and culture and began studying the language. He became proficient in Chinese and translated many Chinese literary works into English, including The Analects of Confucius, The Book of Mencius, and The Tao Te Ching. His translations were highly regarded and helped to introduce Chinese literature to the Western world.
In addition to his translations, Giles also wrote several books on Chinese history and culture, including The Civilization of China, A Chinese Biographical Dictionary, and A History of Chinese Literature.
