He was the second son of Henry James Sr., a philosopher and theologian, and Mary Robertson James, a wealthy heiress. James's early works were primarily travelogues and essays, but he soon turned to fiction. His first novel, Watch and Ward, was published in 1871. James's writing style was characterized by his use of complex sentence structures, psychological insight, and subtle irony. He was known for his ability to capture the nuances of human behavior and the complexities of social relationships.
Some of James's best-known works include The Portrait of a Lady (1881), The Turn of the Screw (1898), and The Wings of the Dove (1902). The Portrait of a Lady is considered one of his greatest achievements and is often cited as one of the greatest novels in the English language.
