Helen Dean Fish was an American author, born in 1888 in New York City. She was the daughter of a prominent lawyer and grew up in a wealthy family. Fish attended Barnard College and graduated in 1910 with a degree in English literature. After graduation, Fish worked as a teacher and later as a librarian. She began writing children's books in the 1920s and quickly gained recognition for her imaginative stories and engaging characters. Her most famous work, The Little Princess in the Wood, was published in 1928 and became an instant classic. The Little Princess in the Wood tells the story of a young girl who is forced to flee her home and live in the forest. There she meets a group of animals who become her friends and help her navigate the challenges of life in the wilderness. The book was praised for its vivid descriptions and heartfelt message about the power of friendship and perseverance. Fish went on to write several more children's books, including The Magic Garden (1931) and The Enchanted Forest (1935).
