Hannes Bok was an American artist and writer, born as Wayne Francis Woodard in Kansas City, Missouri, on July 2, 1914. He was known for his science fiction and fantasy illustrations, as well as his short stories and novels. Bok's childhood was marked by poverty and illness, and he spent much of his time reading and drawing. He dropped out of high school at the age of 16 and moved to New York City to pursue a career in art. He worked as a freelance illustrator for magazines such as Weird Tales, Amazing Stories, and Fantasy Magazine. In the 1940s, Bok began writing his own science fiction and fantasy stories, often illustrating them himself. His first published work was the short story "The Sorcerer's Ship," which appeared in the magazine Unknown in 1942. He went on to publish several novels, including The Sorcerer's Ship (1942), Beyond the Golden Stair (1948), and The Blue Flamingo (1949).
