H. Rider Haggard was a British author born on June 22, 1856, in Bradenham, Norfolk, England. He was the eighth child of a barrister and was educated at Ipswich Grammar School and London University. After completing his studies, he worked as a barrister for a short time before turning to writing.
Haggard's first novel, "King Solomon's Mines," was published in 1885 and became an instant success. The book tells the story of Allan Quatermain, a hunter in Africa who sets out to find a lost diamond mine. The novel was followed by a sequel, "Allan Quatermain," and several other adventure novels set in Africa, including "She" and "Nada the Lily."
Haggard's novels were popular for their vivid descriptions of exotic locations and their thrilling adventures. He was also known for his portrayal of strong, independent female characters, which was unusual for the time.
