George Borrow was a British author and traveler who was born on July 5, 1803, in East Dereham, Norfolk, England. He was the son of a soldier and spent much of his childhood moving around with his family. Borrow was educated at Norwich Grammar School and later worked as a solicitor's clerk in London. Borrow's love for languages and literature led him to become a translator and writer. He was fluent in several languages, including Welsh, Spanish, and Romani. His first major work was The Zincali: An Account of the Gypsies of Spain, which was published in 1841. The book was a huge success and established Borrow as a leading authority on the Romani people. In 1854, Borrow published his most famous work, Lavengro: The Scholar, the Gypsy, the Priest. The book is a semi-autobiographical account of Borrow's life and travels in England and Wales.
