Frances Hodgson Burnett was a British-American author born on November 24, 1849, in Manchester, England. She was the third of five children and grew up in poverty. Her father died when she was only four years old, and her mother struggled to support the family.
Despite her difficult upbringing, Burnett showed an early talent for writing. She began writing stories and poems as a child and had her first story published in a magazine when she was only 19 years old.
In 1865, Burnett emigrated to the United States with her mother and siblings, settling in Knoxville, Tennessee. She continued to write and publish stories, eventually becoming a successful author of both children's and adult literature.
Some of Burnett's most famous works include Little Lord Fauntleroy (1885), A Little Princess (1905), and The Secret Garden (1911). These books are still beloved by readers today and have been adapted into numerous films, plays, and musicals.
