Frances Hodgson Burnett was a British-American author born on November 24, 1849, in Manchester, England. She was the third of five children and grew up in poverty. Her father died when she was only four years old, and her mother struggled to support the family. Despite these challenges, Burnett showed a talent for storytelling from a young age. In 1865, Burnett's family immigrated to the United States, settling in Knoxville, Tennessee. There, she continued to write and eventually published her first story, "Miss Carruthers' Engagement," in Godey's Lady's Book in 1868. She went on to publish several more stories and novels, including "That Lass o' Lowrie's" (1877) and "Haworth's" (1879). However, it was Burnett's children's books that would make her a household name. Her most famous work, "The Secret Garden," was published in 1911 and has since become a beloved classic.
