Author Profile

Frances Hodgson Burnett was an English-American author born on November 24, 1849, in Manchester, England. She was the third of five children and grew up in poverty. Her father died when she was only four years old, leaving her mother to support the family. Despite the financial struggles, Burnett was an avid reader and writer from a young age. In 1865, Burnett's family immigrated to the United States and settled in Knoxville, Tennessee. She continued to write and eventually published her first story, "Miss Carruthers' Engagement," in Godey's Lady's Book in 1868. In 1873, she married Dr. Swan Burnett and moved to Washington D.C. where she continued to write and publish stories. Burnett's most famous work is "The Secret Garden," published in 1911. The novel tells the story of a young girl named Mary Lennox who discovers a neglected garden on her uncle's estate and brings it back to life. The book has been adapted into numerous films, plays, and musicals and is considered a classic of children's literature. Anot
