Emmeline Pankhurst was a British political activist and suffragette who was born on July 14, 1858, in Manchester, England. She was the eldest of ten children and grew up in a politically active family. Her parents were both involved in the abolitionist movement, and her mother was a suffragist.
Pankhurst attended a local school and later went to Paris to study at the École Normale de Neuilly. She returned to England in 1879 and married Richard Pankhurst, a lawyer and supporter of women's rights. The couple had five children, and Emmeline became involved in the women's suffrage movement.
In 1903, Pankhurst founded the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU), which became known for its militant tactics in the fight for women's right to vote. Pankhurst and her followers were arrested numerous times for their protests, hunger strikes, and acts of vandalism.
Pankhurst wrote several books about her experiences as a suffragette, including My Own Story, which was published in 1914.
