Ellis Parker Butler was an American author, born on December 5, 1869, in Muscatine, Iowa. He was the youngest of five children and grew up in a family of modest means. Butler's father was a carpenter, and his mother was a homemaker. Despite their financial struggles, Butler's parents encouraged their children to pursue education and creativity. Butler attended Muscatine High School and later the University of Iowa, where he studied engineering. However, he dropped out of college to pursue a career in writing. He started his career as a journalist, working for various newspapers and magazines, including the Muscatine Journal, the Des Moines Daily News, and the Chicago Daily News. Butler's first book, "The Cheerful Smugglers," was published in 1898. He went on to write over 30 books, including novels, short story collections, and poetry.
