Ekai Kawaguchi was a Japanese Buddhist monk, scholar, and explorer who lived from 1866 to 1945. He is best known for his travels to Tibet and his book Three Years in Tibet, which chronicles his experiences there. Kawaguchi was born in a small village in Japan and was ordained as a Buddhist monk at the age of 19. He studied at several Buddhist temples in Japan and became known for his knowledge of Buddhist scriptures and philosophy. In 1897, Kawaguchi set out on a journey to Tibet, which was then closed to foreigners. He disguised himself as a Chinese doctor and traveled through China and Tibet, visiting monasteries and studying with Tibetan lamas. He also collected rare Buddhist texts and artifacts, which he later donated to Japanese museums. Kawaguchi's travels were not without danger.
