Edward Lear was an English artist, illustrator, and writer who was born on May 12, 1812, in Holloway, London. He was the 20th of 21 children and was raised by his eldest sister Ann. Lear suffered from epilepsy and depression throughout his life, which affected his work and personal relationships.
Lear began his career as an artist at the age of 15, working as an illustrator for the Zoological Society of London. He later worked as a landscape painter and traveled extensively throughout Europe and the Middle East, where he drew inspiration for his artwork and writing.
Lear is best known for his book of nonsense poetry, A Book of Nonsense, which was first published in 1846. The book contains limericks and other humorous poems that are still popular with children today. Lear's nonsense verse was groundbreaking at the time, and he is considered one of the pioneers of the genre.
