Edgar Rice Burroughs was an American author born on September 1, 1875, in Chicago, Illinois. He was the fourth child of a businessman and a homemaker. Burroughs had a difficult childhood, and after failing to graduate from high school, he worked a series of odd jobs, including a cowboy, gold miner, and railroad policeman.
In 1911, Burroughs published his first novel, "A Princess of Mars," which introduced the world to his most famous character, John Carter. The book was a success, and Burroughs went on to write 10 more books in the series. He also created the character Tarzan in his 1912 novel "Tarzan of the Apes," which spawned a series of 24 books.
Burroughs was a prolific writer, and in addition to his science fiction and adventure novels, he wrote westerns, historical fiction, and even a few mysteries. Some of his other notable works include "The Land That Time Forgot," "The Moon Maid," and "The Warlord of Mars."
