Edith Nesbit (1858-1924) was an English author and poet, best known for her children's books. She was born in London and grew up in a middle-class family. Her father died when she was young, and her mother struggled to support the family. Nesbit was educated at home and later attended a boarding school in France.
In 1880, Nesbit married Hubert Bland, a political activist and writer. They had five children together, and Nesbit often used their experiences as inspiration for her stories. The couple was also part of a group of writers and artists known as the Fabian Society, which advocated for socialism and social reform.
Nesbit's first book, The Story of the Treasure Seekers, was published in 1899 and was an instant success. She went on to write more than 60 books, including The Railway Children (1906), Five Children and It (1902), and The Phoenix and the Carpet (1904). Her stories often featured children who were independent and resourceful, and who faced challenges and adventures.
