Daniel Parish Kidder was an American Methodist Episcopal missionary, author, and educator. He was born on October 18, 1815, in Darien, New York, and died on July 29, 1891, in Orange, New Jersey. Kidder graduated from Wesleyan University in 1836 and later attended the Biblical Institute in Concord, New Hampshire. He was ordained as a Methodist Episcopal minister in 1839 and served as a missionary in Brazil from 1840 to 1856. During his time in Brazil, Kidder wrote several books, including Brazil and the Brazilians (1857), which became a standard reference work on the country. After returning to the United States, Kidder became a professor of Oriental languages and literature at Garrett Biblical Institute in Evanston, Illinois. He also served as the editor of the Western Christian Advocate and wrote several books on theology and missionary work, including The Penitent Boy (1860), which became a popular children's book.
