Annie Fellows Johnston was an American author born on October 15, 1863, in McCutchanville, Indiana. She was the eldest of four children and grew up in a family that valued education and literature. Her father was a Presbyterian minister, and her mother was a homemaker who encouraged her children to read and write. Johnston attended the University of Iowa and graduated in 1885. She then worked as a teacher and a journalist before turning to writing full-time. Her first book, Big Brother, was published in 1892 and was a success. She went on to write over 40 books, many of which were aimed at children and young adults. One of Johnston's most famous works is The Little Colonel series, which follows the adventures of a young girl named Lloyd Sherman. The series was hugely popular and was adapted into several films, including one starring Shirley Temple.
