Annie Fellows Johnston was an American author born on October 15, 1863, in McCutchanville, Indiana. She was the eldest of three children and grew up in a family that valued education and literature. Her father was a Presbyterian minister, and her mother was a homemaker who encouraged her children to read and write. Johnston attended the University of Iowa and graduated with a degree in literature in 1885. She then moved to Washington, D.C., where she worked as a newspaper reporter and wrote short stories for magazines. In 1892, she married William Johnston, a lawyer, and they settled in Pewee Valley, Kentucky, where they raised their two children. Johnston is best known for her series of children's books, The Little Colonel, which was published between 1895 and 1918. The books were based on Johnston's own experiences growing up in the South and featured a young girl named Lloyd Sherman, who was based on Johnston's niece.
