Abraham Merritt, known as A. Merritt, was an American author born on January 20, 1884, in Beverly, New Jersey. He was the son of a Baptist minister and grew up in a religious household. Merritt attended Haverford College but dropped out after two years to pursue a career in journalism.
Merritt worked as a reporter for several newspapers, including the Philadelphia Inquirer and the New York Evening Sun. He also wrote for magazines such as Argosy, All-Story Weekly, and Adventure. Merritt's first published work was a short story called "Through the Dragon Glass" in 1917.
Merritt's writing was heavily influenced by his interest in science fiction, fantasy, and adventure. His stories often featured exotic locations, ancient civilizations, and supernatural creatures. Some of his best-known works include The Moon Pool (1918), The Metal Monster (1920), and Dwellers in the Mirage (1932).
